Features

RyeType is built around one habit: show the piece, then talk about it. Here is everything a profile and a post can do, and the few things we decided to leave out.

Cover-led posts

The cover comes first

Every post can open with a full-width cover image. In grids, profiles and topic pages the cover is the card, so a page of posts reads like a wall of work rather than a list of headlines.

No cover? Still a good card

Posts without an image get a type specimen card built from the title’s first letter, in the site’s palette. Text-only essays sit comfortably next to visual case studies.

A table of contents

Longer posts list their section headings in a sidebar, so readers can jump straight to the part about the grid, the colour system or the type pairing.

Tags that travel

Tags link to topic pages that gather posts from every profile on the site. A tag like lettering or brand identity becomes a running collection.

A profile that works like a portfolio

Banner, portrait, bio

Each writer gets a profile at their own address with a banner image, a portrait, a short bio and an optional link to their own website.

Tabs for posts, categories and about

The profile is split into tabs: a grid of posts, the writer’s own categories, and an about section that can hold a curated introduction with links to their best work.

Categories you define

Writers file posts under categories of their own, such as case studies, process or lettering. Each category has its own page with the full set.

Honest numbers only

Profiles show how many posts and categories a writer has and when they joined. That is all. No follower counts, likes or view tallies.

For readers

Free, no account

Everything on RyeType can be read without signing up. No pop-ups asking for an email address, no paywall.

Follow by RSS

Every profile has its own feed, behind the Follow (RSS) button. The whole site has one too, at /feed.xml.

Replies, reviewed

Readers reply with a name and a comment. A moderator reads each reply before it is published, so threads stay about the work.

Fast and readable

Pages are plain server-rendered HTML and CSS. They load quickly, work on any phone, and handle Vietnamese and other accented text properly.

What we left out

  • Ads and tracking. No advertising, no analytics, no tracking pixels and no third-party scripts.
  • Vanity metrics. No likes, no follower counts, no view counters on posts.
  • Open sign-up. Writer accounts are by invitation, which keeps the site small and focused on design writing.
