RyeType collects very little, and this page lists all of it. In short: reading the site needs no account, readers get no cookies, and nothing on the site tracks you.
When you read
You can read every page on RyeType without an account. We do not set cookies for readers, and we do not use analytics, advertising, tracking pixels or third-party scripts.
Like almost every website, our web server keeps standard access logs: your IP address, the page you asked for, your browser’s user agent and the time of the request. We use these logs only to keep the site secure and running. They are rotated and deleted after about two weeks.
When you reply to a post
To reply, you enter a name and your reply. We do not ask for an email address. Your name and reply are stored so a moderator can review them and, if approved, publish them under the post. Replies that are never approved are deleted automatically after 30 days. Published replies stay with the post unless you ask us to remove them.
When you contact us
The contact form asks for your name, your email address, a topic and your message. We use these only to read and answer your message and to handle your request. Contact messages are deleted automatically after 90 days.
Spam protection
When you send a reply or a contact message, your IP address is checked in memory to limit how many messages can be sent in a short time. This check is how we keep spam down. The IP address is not stored in the site’s database.
Cookies
Readers get no cookies at all. The only cookie RyeType sets is a session cookie for the site’s administrators when they sign in to moderate replies and messages.
Other services your browser talks to
Some files on RyeType are loaded from other providers. When your browser fetches them, those providers receive your IP address and browser information, as with any web request:
- Google Fonts (fonts.googleapis.com and fonts.gstatic.com) serves the typefaces used across the site.
- Unsplash (images.unsplash.com) serves the photographs on the home page.
Images inside writers’ posts are hosted on the site itself. The site is served over HTTPS with certificates from Let’s Encrypt.
Writers
Writer accounts are by invitation. A writer’s profile shows what they choose to publish: a name, a portrait, a short bio, an optional website link, and their posts. Writers keep ownership of their work and can ask for posts or their whole profile to be removed.
Your requests
You can ask to see the information we hold about you, to correct it, or to delete it: for example, a reply you wrote or a message you sent. Use the contact page and choose Privacy request. Tell us enough to find the data, such as the post address and the name you used. We may ask a question to confirm the request is yours before acting on it.
Changes to this page
If what we collect or how we use it changes, we will update this page and the date at the top.
