About RyeType
RyeType is a showcase community for designers who write. It is a place to put the work up front, cover first, and then explain it properly: the brief, the dead ends, the type choices, the reasons.
Why it exists
Portfolio sites are good at showing finished pieces and bad at showing thinking. Long-form blogs are good at thinking and often forget the pictures. RyeType sits between the two. Every post leads with its cover image, every profile is laid out like a portfolio, and every post has room for as many words as the work needs.
How it is put together
- Profiles. Each writer has a profile at their own address, with a banner, a portrait, a short bio, an optional link to their site, and tabs for posts, categories and an about section.
- Posts. Cover-led posts with a table of contents on longer pieces, tags that link to topic pages across the whole site, and a reply thread at the end.
- Categories and topics. Writers sort their own work into categories. Tags connect posts from different profiles, so you can follow a subject as well as a person.
Reading and following
Reading RyeType is free and needs no account. There are no ads, no analytics and no tracking scripts. To follow a writer, use the Follow (RSS) button on their profile in any feed reader; the whole site also has a feed at /feed.xml.
Replies
Anyone can reply to a post with a name and a comment. Replies are read by the RyeType moderators before they appear, which keeps threads about the work and free of spam.
Posting here
Writer accounts are by invitation; there is no public sign-up. If you design and write and would like a profile, tell us about your work through the contact page. The house journal, Type Notes, is where we write about the craft ourselves.
